“Understanding Elephants”

Dr Sumith Pilapitiya, a Lead Environmental Specialist attached to the South Asia Environment and Natural Resources Unit of the World Bank gave a well illustrated talk on “Understanding Elephants” at the Mahatma Gandhi centre on Tuesday 25, November 2014.  Conflict between humans and elephants is increasing as they compete for space and resources. As more land area is claimed for agriculture elephants are confined and designated areas are inadequate to carry the increasing elephant population, particularly during the dry season. This increases the human-elephant conflict and there needs to be a change of policy to find ways of co-existence rather than treating elephants with hostility.
